Definitions of Home Automation

An actuator is the part of a system that carries out the action. In home automation, it’s what physically moves or changes something  like opening blinds, turning on a tap, or adjusting a chair. For OTs, actuators translate digital commands into real-world functions that support independence (e.g., an automated door opener for wheelchair access).

Using technology to set up routines that happen on their own, without needing the person to physically do it. In OT, it supports independence, energy conservation, and executive function challenges. E.g., lights that turn on when someone enters the room.

Geofencing is a smart-home feature that uses GPS or mobile location services to create a virtual boundary around your property. When your phone or registered devices cross that boundary, the system can automatically trigger personalised actions like turning lights on, adjusting climate control, unlocking gates, or activating security systems.

Interoperability is the ability of different smart devices, systems, and platforms to communicate and work together seamlessly. In a high-end home automation setting, interoperability ensures that lighting, security, climate, entertainment, and other technologies integrate into one unified ecosystem.

A protocol is the set of digital “rules” or languages that smart devices use to communicate with each other. In home automation, protocols (like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or Wi-Fi) define how data is transmitted, how secure it is, and how reliably devices can connect.

A scene is a group of automated actions that happen together with one command. For example, a “Good Morning” scene might open the blinds, start the coffee machine, and adjust lighting. For clients, scenes make routines easier, supporting participation in daily life (e.g., a “Bedtime” scene that dims lights, locks doors, and lowers the thermostat).

Sensors detect changes in the environment, like motion, light, or temperature, and feed this information back to the system. In OT practice, sensors can enhance safety and independence (e.g., motion sensors that turn on hallway lights at night, or a pressure sensor in a bed that alerts caregivers if a client gets up).

A trigger is what sets an automated action in motion. It could be a person walking into a room (detected by a sensor), a voice command, or even geofencing. Understanding triggers helps OTs design systems that fit into a client’s routines (e.g., lights switching on when someone enters the bathroom).

VIPAs (like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri) are devices that respond to spoken commands. They allow users to control lights, heating, music, or reminders without needing hands-on interaction (e.g., saying “Hey Google, turn on the TV” or “Alexa, remind me to take my medication”).
